We’re proud to own and manage 15 country houses across the UK, each located in some of our best-loved national parks and National Landscapes. We’ve got cosy Victorian manors, elegant Georgian mansions, restored farmhouses, lakeside hideaways, and much more. With a vast majority of our employees living on site, our country houses are not only stunning places to live and work, but their surroundings provide endless adventures on days off.

Abingworth

Abingworth Hall is a cosy former farmhouse located in the South Downs National Park. The house is on the outskirts of Thakeham, a small village with a pub just a 20-minute walk away. The coastal town of Worthing is a 30-minute drive away where live-in staff go to make use of its wide selection of shops, pubs, and restaurants. Regular rail services run from nearby Horsham into London, taking just 1 hour 30 minutes to reach London Victoria.

Nether Grange is a former 18th-century granary, located in the charming coastal village of Alnmouth. Famous for its colourful cottages, beautiful beach, and easy access to Northumberland National Park, Alnmouth is a great place to live and work. The team here are a friendly bunch, often spending time off together in nearby Newcastle or unwinding with a post-work drink in one of the village’s six country pubs. The market town of Alnwick is just a 10-minute bus ride away and East Coast Mainline services from Alnmouth Railway Station can take you into Newcastle city centre in less than 25 minutes.

Harrington House is our historic Grade II-listed property in Bourton-on-the-Water – the picturesque Cotswold village known for its gorgeous cottages, traditional tearooms, and stone bridges. The house has space for eight live-in team members and sits within walking distance of top local attractions such as the Cotswold Motoring Museum and Birdland Park & Gardens. Many of our team members spend time off exploring the surrounding countryside, quizzing together in Bourton’s pubs, or visiting the popular town of Cheltenham which is just a 30-minute drive away and renowned for its racecourse and healthy selection of shops, bars, and restaurants.

Brecon

Not many places in the UK outshine Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog) National Park when it comes to wide open spaces and soul-stirring views. You’ll be within easy distance of some of the area’s show-stealing spots, including the Black Mountains, the Mellte Valley, and Pen y Fan - the highest point in the national park at 886 metres. Equally visit-worthy is the Big Pit National Coal Museum in Blaenavon, the National Showcaves Centre for Wales in Abercrave, and the bibliophile’s paradise that is Hay-on-Wye. Should time allow, Hereford and Cardiff are both an hour’s drive away.

There’s a relaxing communal area where staff get together in their free time and on days off, many often head into the larger market town of Shrewsbury, which is only a 15-minute train ride away from Church Stretton. From Shrewsbury, a one-hour train journey will take you into the heart of Birmingham.

Monk Coniston is our charming Grade II-listed house overlooking Coniston Water. Located in the Southern Lake District, the house is perfect for those seeking to live and work surrounded by the very same landscapes that inspired the likes of William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. A team of 11 staff live on-site and many enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle, regularly taking walks together by the lake or climbing the village’s namesake mountain, the Old Man of Coniston. The centre of Coniston has a small number of shops, pubs, and restaurants and is around a 25-minute walk away. More options can be found in Ambleside, which is 20 minutes by car.

Set on the shores of Derwentwater, this 40-bedroom country house has a privileged waterfront position in the village of Portinscale. Located in the Northern Lake District, it’s an ideal place to live and work for those who love the outdoors. Walking, climbing, and lake sports are popular, and the house puts you in easy reach of Scafell Pike, England’s tallest mountain. Keswick is just a 20-minute walk away and offers plenty of shops, bars, and restaurants as well as a climbing wall. Accommodation for 11 live-in team members is a mix of en-suite and shared bathrooms, and all staff benefit from discounts with a local taxi company. Penrith Railway Station is a 30-minute drive and West Coast Mainline services run regularly between Glasgow Central and London Euston.

Dovedale

The Peveril of the Peak is a characterful country house set in the tiny village of Thorpe. Staff at the country house enjoy spending time together in their own private communal space, as well as the local pub which is less than an 8-minute walk away. On days off, many visit Ashbourne, which is just a 10-minute drive and has numerous shops, bars, and restaurants. The famous theme park Alton Towers is also nearby and can be reached in as little as 20 minutes by car.

There are few places more idyllic to live and work than the Isle of Wight and Freshwater Bay House is our stunning seafront property on the island’s northwest coast. The house sits just steps from the sands of its namesake bay and many staff take the opportunity for a post-work swim during summer. The centre of Freshwater Bay boasts plenty of shops, pubs, and restaurants and the larger town of Newport is just 25 minutes by car. Yarmouth – an 11-minute drive away – is the nearest departure point for the hour-long ferry ride to the south coast of England.

This stately house in North Ballachulish sits on the scenic shores of Loch Leven. Eight team members live in on-site private chalets, each with separate entrance and en-suite bathrooms, for a quiet post-work retreat from the main house. The team takes advantage of having the Scottish Highlands in their backyard with regular walks in nearby Glen Coe National Nature Reserve, just a 10-minute drive away. The house is close to local attractions, too. Ballachulish’s 9-hole Woodlands Golf Course is less than a 30-minute walk away while Fort William, known as the UK’s Outdoor Capital, is just 25-minutes by car. The area’s natural beauty, peaceful setting, and proximity to incredible outdoor experiences make it a great place to live and work.

The team’s camaraderie and dedication earned them a VisitEngland ROSE award for exceptional service. Many staff have advanced their careers here, progressing into leadership roles. Team members enjoy local taxi discounts to Skipton, Leeds/Bradford Airport, and Manchester Airport, making travel easier. In their free time, the team often visit Skipton or nearby Gargrave and take regular day trips to Leeds (40 minutes approx.) or Blackpool (60 minutes approx.) by train for shopping, dining, and entertainment.

Thorns Hall is our cosy Grade-II listed manor house nestled in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The country house is only a 10-minute walk from the centre of the small market town of Sedbergh. Known as England’s official ‘book town’ Sedbergh has an excellent selection of bookshops as well as a handful of pubs and restaurants. A 25-minute drive away, Kendal offers a wider selection of entertainment and dining options and is well connected by rail via regular West Coast Mainline services between Glasgow Central and London Euston.

Within easy reach of Exmoor National Park and less than a 10-minute drive to the coast, Holnicote House offers an ideal place to live and work. The house is a cosy cottage full of character, and nine team members reside in on-site staff accommodation, opposite the main building. On days off, the team enjoys exploring West Somerset, taking advantage of the coastal bus that runs from Watchet to Ilfracombe. Popular destinations include Lynton, Lynmouth, the scenic Quantock Hills, and local attractions like the cinema and leisure park in Minehead. The nearest town, Porlock, is just 1.5 miles away. Staff love working at this house for its picturesque rural location and the strong sense of team spirit.

St Ives

Chy Morvah is located just a five-minute walk from the centre of pretty St Ives, the popular Cornish seaside resort known for its plentiful supply of shops, bars, and beautiful beaches. Many staff members here enjoy taking walks along the Cornish coast, and also visit nearby towns like Penzance or Truro for days out. Penzance is less than 25 minutes by car or 45 minutes by train whilst Truro is an hour away by train. Every two weeks, the team enjoys special lunches or cakes, and the house has a ‘Birthday Champion’ who organises birthday celebrations for staff.

Whitby

Larpool Hall is our Grade-II listed house situated on the outskirts of the historic seaside town of Whitby. The nearest bus stop is a 10-minute walk from the house, and from there, the centre of Whitby is a short 15-minute bus ride away. There’s a strong sense of unity across the whole team here and staff enjoy regular walks together on the North York Moors or the Cleavland Way as well as visits to Robin Hood’s Bay.
